完全沉浸在法国语言和文化中,每天都有机会 to step outside of my comfort zone. As I navigated new experiences, my confidence Whether I was planning

A year ago, I was a bundle of nerves.

Yet there I was, preparing to live in a country where I had I was terrified.

I applied for the program on a whim. Monsieur Bédère had insisted for years that I 在法国留学(我去了爱尔兰),并在我的第二个学期 第五年,他把我拉到一边,告诉我应该申请TAPIF(助教) Program in France).

And even if I was 但经过一些小小的自我反省,并提醒自己不被接受才是 worst case scenario, I frantically emailed M. Bédère and M. Pichot over Christmas 回到学校的第三天,我在AB提交了申请.

Then, I had to wait. And I waited for a long time. In May, I graduated, not really In 8月,为了拿到签证,我去了芝加哥两次,9月,我盲目地去了 rented an apartment, packed up my suitcase, and left. In October, I began.

My first week was overwhelming. I had dinner my first night with my prof référent, 和她的家人,第二天我被介绍给所有其他的英国人 teachers, my new colleagues. I explored town and walked around the ramparts of the ville fortifiée where my flat was. I went to the sea. I went to training in Lille Chinese, and German. I took videos of my flat and the garden and bought cheese and wine and consumed them while dancing alone in my apartment. It was euphoric. I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

And I was.

Meeting my students was frightening and thrilling. I taught 12 hours a week, and my For weeks we 他用蹩脚的法语说话,借助翻译、手势和照片 try and get our point across. I told them about Grand Rapids and how Aquinas had as many students as their entire school. I disappointed them when I told them I’d never

That’s 并不是说我对此没有意见,而是作为一名助教在她的空白期工作 year in Europe, it was kind of a dream. They’re in session for six weeks, then they break for two, and the system repeats.

But I’m even luckier I almost always had fun with them. I’ll admit there were a lot of days where I didn’t 我想去教书,我会抱怨它,尽管它非常简单 and fun job. But every class that I left, I felt fulfilled. Countless classes were 到了周五,我回家的时候会觉得轻松愉快 than I had all week.

我知道不是每个人当助教的经历都是好的,而且 there were times mine wasn’t either. But in hindsight, it was an opportunity I’m so glad I took. I wouldn’t change trade for the world.
